Workplace violence against medical doctors in number of Hospitals at Al-Rusafa District

Abstract:
Background: The prevalence of workplace violence by patients and visitors against healthcare personnel is significant worldwide. Since 2003, there has been an uptick in violence against physicians in Iraq. The most frequent form of aggression is verbal abuse, which frequently leads to physical assault or threats. Object: The study aimed to measure the prevalence of various forms of violence among doctors, effect on life, their responses, associated risk factors and mitigation strategies.

Material & Method: A cross-sectional study has been conducted among 500 doctors.The data was gathered from four hospitals located on Al-Rusafa side of Baghdad. The four hospitals (Imam Ali Hospital, Nu'man Teaching Hospital, Ibn Al-Balady Children & Maternity Hospital and Al-kindy teaching hospital) were selected by convenience sampling and data collection done by using a self-administered questionnaire divided into part one: sociodemographic and part two composed of five sections: Type of violence, affect, report of violence, associated factors and mitigation strategies.
Results: The prevalence of workplace violence among participants was 51.8%, 31% exposed to only verbal violence and 69% exposed to both verbal and physical. There was a strong association between exposure to violence and the age group of < 35 years, being un-married, senior residents and having less than 5 years of experience (value < 0.05).
Conclusions: A significant number of participants in the survey had encountered workplace violence and this affecting not just their career but also their personal, social and family life.
