Abstract:
Background: Breast diseases encompass a broad spectrum, extending from benign inflammatory issues to fatal malignancies. The incidence of breast diseases is on the rise globally, likely influenced by increased awareness of breast cancer, which ranks as the predominant cancer among women. This study's objective is to identify the patterns of breast diseases in women aged 35 and above visiting the Al Elwiyah Early Breast Disease Detection Center.
Methods: Using BI-RADS breast density, ACR was used to categories breast density, this study categorized medical records of women 35 and older at Al-Elwiya Maternity and Al-Yarmook Teaching Hospital in Baghdad from March to September 2023 into two groups: Non-dense (Group I) and dense (Group II). After reviewing demographics and breastfeeding length, it classified final diagnosis as benign, infectious/inflammatory, malignant, or no results. The relationship between breast density and diagnostic categories was examined statistically.
Results: This study examined the demographic, health-related characteristics, and diagnostic outcomes of women 35 and older attending a health center, finding a majority (76.5%) over 40 years old, with significant percentage overweight or obese, and a notable history of family breast cancer (54.5%). Most diagnoses were made using mammography and ultrasound, with 61.5% of cases being benign lesions and 7.5% malignancies. Significant associations were identified between breast density, BIRADS classifications from mammography and ultrasound, and the likelihood of benign versus malignant outcomes, underscoring the importance of these diagnostic tools in assessing breast disease risk.
Conclusion: This study highlights overweight and obesity, fertility behaviors, and a strong family history of breast cancer in women over 40. Most of the lesions are benign, and mammography and ultrasound are important for detecting breast diseases. Breast density, BIRADS classification, and diagnostic results were significantly associated, highlighting the importance of breast density and BIRADS in predicting breast lesions and directing screening and diagnostic procedures.
