Prevalence and risk factor of depression among diabetic patient in a major tertiary hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia (KSA)

Abstract:
Background: Diabetes mellitus is one of the most common disease in Saudi Arabia with various complication throughout its course. This can affected on psychological status and lead to depression.
Objective: The intention of this study is to explore the association between diabetes mellitus and depression. And risk factors that might lead to depression among Diabetic patient.
Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on a random sample of 342 patient. Depression level was measured by beck depression inventory questioner (BDI).
Results: A total of 309 patient completed the questionnaire which resulted in a response rate of 91%. in our study 168 (53.5%) patients had considered normal level of depression, 62 (19.7%) patients had mild mood disturbance level of depression, 37 (11.8%) patients had borderline clinical depression, 28 (8.9%) patients had moderate depression, 13 (4.1%) patients had severe depression level and only 6(1.9%) patients had extreme level of depression. Also, there was statistically significant (P = 0.009) association between gender and depression level In another word, comparatively, females are more depressive than males (76.9% females). Similarly, there was statistically significant (P = 0.001) association between marital status and depression level. The alternative, comparatively married people are more depressive than other, (61.5%) married people and four (30.8%) single, one (7.7%) widow were observed. Furthermore, diagnosis of DM, past medical history and diet had statistically significant association with level of depression.
Conclusion:Depression level is highly prevalent among the diabetic patient surveyed. This issue is of paramount importance requiring preventive and intervention measures to help patient cope with his medical status. Improving the social status is also important to reduce the level of depression.
