Abstract:

Background: Premarital screening (PMS) is an essential public health measure to reduce the prevalence of genetic and infectious diseases among couples, particularly in regions with high consanguinity rates like Iraq. Despite its significance, gaps in knowledge, perception, and attitudes persist. This study explores factors influencing PMS knowledge, perception, and attitudes among couples in Baghdad.
Objectives: To assess knowledge, perception, and attitudes toward PMS and examine their association with sociodemographic characteristics.
Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted from1st March to 31August 2024 at the Premarital Screening Clinic in Al-Imamain Al-Kadhimain Medical City, Baghdad. A total of 385 participants were collected using convenience sampling. Data were collected via a structured questionnaire and analyzed using SPSS v23 with chi-square tests.
Results: The mean participant age was 29.5 years, with 55.1% males. Most lived in urban areas (88.3%) and were single (76.6%). Adequate PMS knowledge was found in 51%, significantly associated with gender, education, and family history of hereditary diseases. Positive perception was reported by 97%, influenced by education and employment status additionally, 85% showed favorable attitudes, significantly linked to consanguinity. Participants acknowledged PMS benefits, but procedural knowledge gaps were evident.
Conclusion: While perceptions and attitudes toward PMS were largely positive, knowledge gaps remain. Targeted educational campaigns and culturally sensitive counseling are essential, particularly in rural and under informed populations.
