Abstract:

Introduction: Polycystic ovarian syndrome is an endocrine disorder among women of reproductive age, with its onset often manifesting during adolescence. Lack of knowledge regarding polycystic ovarian syndrome and poor lifestyle choices are considered to be the major factors leading to polycystic ovarian syndrome.
Method: This cross-sectional study aims to assess the knowledge and awareness of polycystic ovarian syndrome among adolescent girls aged 10-19 years attending the outpatient department of the Government Homeopathic Medical College. The participants, a total of 100, were surveyed using a structured, self-administered questionnaire consisting of 20 questions capturing personal data, awareness regarding PCOS, its signs and symptoms, risk factors, and management.
Results: The study revealed that while 67% of the participants had minimal knowledge about PCOS, only 15% had sound knowledge, and 18% were totally ignorant. Irregular periods (52%) and difficulty in pregnancy (48%) were identified as the most recognized symptoms. Infertility was the most commonly acknowledged complication (66%), while awareness of other complications, such as diabetes and weight gain, was lower. Among those diagnosed with PCOS (12%), the primary diagnostic methods were ultrasound (50%) and symptoms (40%).
The study also found that 52% of the participants obtained information about PCOS from the Internet, followed by information received from doctors (38%). Additionally, 68% was of the opinion that a healthy diet plays an important role in managing PCOS, and 74% believed exercise helps in managing the condition, although a lack of interest and time were cited as major barriers to regular physical activity.
Conclusion: The results underscore the need for enhanced PCOS awareness programs that emphasises lifestyle modifications, the benefits of regular exercise, and awareness regarding available treatment options. Increased IEC activities about PCOS can lead to early diagnosis, better management, prevention of complications and improvement in reproductive health outcomes for adolescent girls. This study concludes that although there is some awareness about PCOS symptoms and complications, there is a significant gap in knowledge regarding its management, necessitating the inclusion of PCOS education in health programs and curricula for adolescent girls.
