Telagamsetty Varamanikanta
Background: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are a significant concern in adolescent and young adult populations, especially among females. Nursing students, as future healthcare providers, must possess adequate knowledge to manage and educate others about UTIs.
Objectives: This study aims to assess the effectiveness of a structured teaching programme on knowledge regarding UTIs among II semester B.Sc. Nursing students.
Methods: A pre-experimental one-group pre-test post-test design was adopted. Thirty II semester B.Sc. Nursing students from ASRAM College of Nursing, Eluru, were selected through convenient sampling. A self-structured knowledge questionnaire was administered before and after the intervention. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics.
Results: Pre-test results showed 93% had inadequate knowledge. After the intervention, 90% demonstrated adequate knowledge. The mean pre-test score was 5.66 (±1.794) and post-test was 21.3 (±2.382). A paired t-test indicated significant improvement (t = 30.5, p<0.05). No significant association was found between knowledge and demographic variables.
Conclusion: The structured teaching programme effectively improved knowledge about UTIs. Regular health education initiatives should be integrated into the nursing curriculum.
