Public awareness and use of antibiotics in Saudi Arabia
Shaima A Alghamdi, Bushra A Alghamdi and Mohammed F Almujalli
Antibiotic resistance is one of the most pressing global health challenges, driven largely by the inappropriate use of antibiotics. This systematic review aims to examine public knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding antibiotic use in Saudi Arabia. By synthesizing findings from studies published between 2013 and 2024, this review identifies critical gaps in public understanding and highlights the role of pharmacists in promoting rational use. The findings suggest that many individuals in Saudi Arabia engage in self-medication and hold misconceptions about the effectiveness and proper usage of antibiotics. These behaviors significantly contribute to antimicrobial resistance. Effective strategies, including pharmacist-led education and stricter regulatory enforcement, are recommended to mitigate the misuse of antibiotics.
